Nett was 10-for-17 with four doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, nine runs scored, and three walks in four games last week. Nett had multiple hits, at least one RBI and at least one run scored in all four games. Texas Tech has the top offense in the conference as they lead the Big 12 in batting (.322), scoring (9.6), doubles (96), on-base (.431), and slugging (.548). BYU catcher Collin Reuter leads the Cougars with a .323 batting average, while infielder Easton Jones leads the team with nine home runs. Mason Olson leads the BYU pitching staff with 47 strikeouts. Cincinnati is 13-4 in 17 home games this season. The Bearcats are hitting .304 at home and outscoring opponents 148-77. All three of Cincinnati's run-rule wins this season have come at home, including two of the last three home games entering play this weekend. • SEC Weekly Roundup (April 11-14): Shake-up at the Top

SEC Weekly Roundup (April 11-14): Shake-up At the Top We’re halfway through the SEC season and now it appears we have a handful of teams jumbled up at the top with Arkansas, Texas A&M, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The Razorbacks have been at the top pretty much all season long, but they ran into a little problem in Tuscaloosa this past weekend dropping a close series to Alabama. Arkansas won the first game 5-3 behind a scoreless outing by Hagan Smith – nothing new to report there. Saturday’s game was a back-and-forth affair with a 2-out home run by Arkansas’ Peyton Holt tying the game in the ninth. But Alabama walked it off in the 10th after a double and error in the 4-3 win. And then in the finale, Alabama freshman Zane Adams pitched 8 shutout innings in a 5-0 win to secure the huge series victory for the Tide. Alabama doesn’t get to celebrate for long as they face Texas A&M next weekend. Speaking of the Texas A&M Aggies, they had a monster weekend with a dominating sweep over Vanderbilt. They won the first game 15-0. Jace LaViolette and Braden Montgomery each hit 2 home runs, while Ryan Prager pitched 7 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts, earning the complete game shutout in a run-rule victory for the Aggies. Tanner Jones pitched 7.1 scoreless innings on Friday night as the Aggies won 9-0. Vanderbilt finally got the bats going in game three scoring 4 runs in the second, but A&M scored 9 unanswered and ultimately won 12-6. Chris Cortez was huge out of the bullpen for Texas A&M as he stopped the early momentum for Vanderbilt and went on to pitch 4.1 scoreless innings with 8 strikeouts. Things just keep getting worse for the LSU Tigers as they got swept at Tennessee this past weekend. Billy Amick got the party starter for Tennessee with a 2-run homer in the first inning of game one. AJ Causey got the win in relief tossing 4.2 scoreless innings with 7 strikeouts. Amick did it again in game two with a double and home run, while Drew Beam (6.2 IP, 8 H, 3 BB, 0 ER, 5 K) out-dueled Luke Holman (5.2 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 2 ER, 4 K) in a 3-1 Tennessee win. In game three, Christian Moore, and Blake Burke combined for 3 home runs, a double, and 6 RBI in an 8-4 Tennessee win. Zander Sechrist was solid on the mound giving up just 2 earned runs in 5.2 innings. If the season ended today LSU would not even make the SEC Tournament. Their schedule gets a little more manageable the rest of the way. The only team in Alabama that can stop Kentucky is Samford, who they lost to in the mid-week. But surrounding that loss they swept Alabama at home and Auburn on the road. Ryan Nicholson gave Kentucky the lead on Thursday with this home run that led to a 6-5 victory. They’d hit 6 home runs in the second game – two more by Nicholson – as they won 9-1. Nicholson would add one more in Sunday’s 13-8 win, while Nick Lopez hit a pair and drove in 5. Kentucky’s pitching has been what carried them a lot this year, but they broke out the bats this past weekend showing they can get it done in multiple ways. One of the best rivalries in college baseball took place this past weekend with Mississippi State going to Ole Miss. And while it looked like the Bulldogs were ready to separate themselves and be among the top in the conference again – especially after Friday’s 8-0 win – Ole Miss rallied to win the weekend. Khal Stephen was great for Mississippi State in their lone win, tossing 8 scoreless innings with 9 strikeouts and just 3 hits allowed. Game two was a seesaw battle that went into extra-innings before Ole Miss got the walk-off win on a 2-RBI single from Jackson Ross. In the finale, it was all Ole Miss in a 14-2 (7) win. Mason Nichols was great on the mound allowing just 1 earned run over 6.1 innings. Ethan Lege hit a pair of home runs, and Will Furniss hit the final one – a 3-run shot for the walk-off run rule. Florida continued their slide losing a series at home to South Carolina. Their pitching staff gave up 28 runs on the weekend – not something we’re used to seeing from the Gators. Give a lot of credit to South Carolina who got a great start from Eli Jones on Friday – 6 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 1 ER, 6 Ks. The offense pounded out 13 hits and earned 6 walks in the 10-3. Ethan Petry and Dalton Reeves each drove in 3 runs in the second game to help give South Carolina a big lead. Florida tried to make a comeback with 4 runs in the eighth, but the Gamecocks held on for a 9-8 win with Tyler Pitzer closing the door in a scoreless ninth. On Sunday, it was South Carolina’s turn to try to make a comeback. After Jac Caglianone had a solid 5-inning start allowing just 3 runs, the bullpen gave up 2 in the sixth, eighth, and ninth. But the Gators managed to get the 11-9 win. Cags also went deep in the game. Ty Evans (2-3, 3 RBI) and Colby Shelton (3-5, 2 RBI) also had big games at the plate for Florida. Georgia found its offense again back home this past weekend with 15-10 and 10-7 wins over Missouri. Charlie Condon was 4-4 with 2 home runs, 5 RBI, and 2 walks in the 15-10 win. Jarvis Evans struck out 9 in 5.1 innings for Georgia. Condon homered again in the 10-7 win, while Slate Alford drove in three. Kolten Smith struck out 10 in 5 relief innings to close out the game. Between those two games, Missouri did pick up a win. After Georgia tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a Kolby Branch single, Missouri took the lead for good in the 10th thanks to a Bulldog error. • Big 12 Weekly Roundup (Apr. 11-14): One Old, One New

New Rankings The new College Baseball Nation Top 25 features two teams this week, down from three last week. The Oklahoma State Cowboys move up five spots to No. 15 after their sweep of Cincinnati in Stillwater this weekend. The West Virginia Mountaineers are making their first appearance in the Top 25 this season, checking in at No. 21 after they swept previous No. 15 ranked UCF in Morgantown over the weekend. A Look Back at Week 5 in Big 12 Baseball Cincinnati at No. 15 Oklahoma State Cincinnati's Seth Logue took the mound to start the second inning on Friday night in Stillwater and he was outstanding against Oklahoma State. Logue tossed the next six innings without allowing a hit or a run and he added nine strikeouts to his line. The game was tied at four at the end of nine innings, making extras necessary. Cowboys reliever Robert Cranz, pitched the final four innings of the game without allowing a run, including the top of the 10th inning. Lane Forsythe launched drive off of the batter's eye in center field for a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th to make Oklahoma State 8-4 winners. The Cowboys got a first inning grand slam by Aidan Meola to erase a 1-0 deficit on their way to a 12-5 series-clinching victory on Saturday. Carson Benge was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a walk, while Colin Brueggemann added a home run. Brian Holiday (3-2) earned the win, pitching six innings in his start after a really rough outing last weekend against Oklahoma. Zach Ehrhard went 3-for-4 on Sunday afternoon with a home run and picked up his 50th hit of the season for Oklahoma State. Aidan Meola also had three hits and four RBI, including a home run. Kollin Ritchie, Ian Daugherty, and Colin Brueggemann also added home runs for the Cowboys. Benge pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts for Oklahoma State to claim the 10-6 win and to complete the weekend sweep. This was the first Big 12 series sweep this season for Oklahoma State. UCF at No. 21 West Virginia A rain delay on Friday night caused the opening game of the weekend to start 90 minutes later than scheduled. Once things got underway, West Virginia's Kyle West led the way for the Mountaineers with three hits and four RBI, including his seventh home run this season. David Hagaman earned the save, his second of the season, with two scoreless innings in which he struck out five Knights batters, as West Virginia claimed game one, 7-6. West Virginia got another complete game from left-hander Derek Clark to claim their home series with UCF by a Saturday final of 7-5. JJ Wetherholt, Reed Chumley, and Sam White all homered for West Virginia while Skylar King accounted for two of West Virginia's seven total hits. UCF reliever Tyler Nesbitt was solid out of the bullpen pitching the final two innings without allowing a run and just one hit. The complete game by Clark was his fourth straight, though in the second of those four games the game went to extras and Clark departed after nine innings with a 1-1 tie. Clark struck out a season-high 10 batters on Saturday. UCF jumped out to a 4-0 in the first inning on Sunday, but West Virginia got three runs right back in the bottom half of the first. West Virginia trailed by four runs at two different points in the game, but the Mountaineers continued to fight back. West and Logan Sauve each drove in three runs and Wetherholt added a two-run home run for the Mountaineers. After a scoreless 10th inning for both teams, West Virginia walked it off on a Chumley solo home run to lead off the bottom of the 11th inning, hammering a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall to complete the sweep with an 11-10 victory. The weekend sweep propelled West Virginia into the College Baseball Nation Top 25. The sweep in Morgantown also dropped UCF out of the Top 25, where they had been a ranked team for the last two weeks. Texas Tech at TCU TJ Pompey was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in a Red Raiders series-opening 7-1 win Friday in Ft. Worth. Ryan Free tossed five innings of one-run baseball while Jacob Rogers and Josh Sanders each tossed two scoreless innings out of the Red Raiders bullpen. The trio of Texas Tech arms allowed only five hits in the game. TCU had a base runner reach base in seven of the nine frames, but never sent more than four batters to the plate in an inning. TCU came back on Saturday afternoon to claim a 4-2 victory and even the series. Horned Frogs right-hander Louis Rodriguez pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed just four hits, he retired 11 of the final 14 batters he faced. A Luke Boyers two-out single in the bottom of the 6th inning proved to be the game winner. Ben Abeldt (2-0) earned the win out of the TCU bullpen pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Kole Klecker handled the 9th inning for the Horned Frogs and earned his first career save with a scoreless inning of work. Klecker struck out all three batters he faced in the 9th inning. Boyers hit a home run and drove in three runs as part of a two-hit game in a 4-3 TCU win on Sunday to take the series against the Red Raiders. The Horned Frogs bullpen tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings to close out the game and the series. The series loss in Ft. Worth dropped Texas Tech from the College Baseball Nation Top 25, where they were ranked for just one week. Texas at Houston Houston opened the series with a dominant 9-1 victory Friday night. Houston used two pitchers in the game, Owen Woodward and Cade Citelli, and they combined to two-hit the Longhorns and struck out 16 Texas batters. Houston’s Cary Arbolida homered twice to lead the Cougars offense. The win for Houston snapped an 11-game losing streak in Big 12 play. Texas evened the series Saturday night edging out Houston 6-5. Dee Kennedy homered twice for the Longhorns, including a go-ahead solo blast in the top of the 9th inning which proved to be the game winner. Gage Boehm pitched two scoreless innings out of the Longhorns bullpen to close out the game and earn his third win of the season. Houston looked poised to take the series on Sunday when they built a 7-2 after six innings. But Texas chipped away with one run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth before plating eight runs in the top of the 9th inning as the Cougars used four pitchers to get out of the frame. Texas hit three home runs in the ninth inning, back-to-back home runs by Peyton Powell and Jalin Flores preceded a Max Belyeu blast. Boehm pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth and Texas emerged as series winners with the 13-8 victory. Baylor at BYU Baylor won the opener in Provo on Thursday 9-2 behind another strong start from Mason Marriott who allowed both BYU runs over five innings. Enzo Apodaca and Cole Posey each had three hits and Daniel Altman drove in three runs to lead the Bears offense. Ethan Calder was great out the bullpen following Marriott with three scoreless innings. BYU was one strike away from evening the series on Friday night leading 4-3 in the top of the 9th inning. An error with the bases loaded allowed the tying run to cross the plate and eventually sent the game into extra innings. The Bears scored four runs in the top of the 10th inning, the first two off of the bat of Tyriq Kemp proved to be enough for the 8-5 victory in 10 innings and the series win on the road. Calder entered the game in the bottom of the 10th to slam the door on a BYU comeback by getting the final out. The Bears completed the road sweep by winning a slugfest 18-17 where the two teams combined for 39 base hits on Saturday afternoon. Cooper Vest led BYU by going 3-for-4 with seven RBI while Wesley Jordan led Baylor's offense with a 3-for-3 five RBI performance including a three-run home run in the first inning. Kemp also drove in four runs on three hits in a nice weekend outing for the Baylor shortstop. The two teams combined to use eleven pitchers in the game. Every pitcher allowed at least one earned run, except for BYU's Mason Olson who pitched three scoreless innings to finish the game. The sweep by Baylor was its first in a Big 12 series, road series, or road Big 12 series since April 2019 at TCU. Kansas State at Oklahoma A nine-run second inning for the Sooners was the ballgame on Friday night as Oklahoma took opener 12-5 in Norman. Five RBI singles, a run-scoring error, and a Kendall Pettis two-run double contributed to the big inning. Meanwhile, on the mound Braden Davis (3-3) was excellent and he earned the win going 5 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run, to go with four hits and seven strikeouts. Unlike Friday, where a big inning early in the game proved to be the difference, the Sooners used a big inning late in the game on Saturday to put the game away and take the series, winning 11-4. Jason Walk was 3-for-4 at the top of the Oklahoma order with a home run and run-scoring bunt single. Anthony Mackenzie and Michael Snyder also homered for the Sooners in a very balanced offensive attack by Oklahoma where eight of the nine batters in the lineup all had hits. Kyson Witherspoon (3-2) pitched 5 1/3 innings and struck out eight Kansas State batters to earn the win. Oklahoma walked off as winners on Sunday afternoon when a run-scoring single by catcher Scott Mudler in the bottom of the 9th inning gave the Sooners the series and the sweep. The hit and the RBI were Mudler's second of each in the game. Jaxon Willits (2-for-4) drove in five runs for the Sooners. Oklahoma's John Spikerman entered the game as a pinch runner, making his first appearance since a hand injury back on March 16. JJ Slack was great on the mound in the middle innings for the Wildcats. Slack threw three scoreless, hitless innings facing the minimum in two of the innings. Kansas did not play a Big 12 opponent this weekend. Quoted "I've never shied away from talking about these games having a deeper level of emotional magic to them. If people can say that then they're probably not truly as heartfelt a Cowboy or Sooner as maybe those of us that are. If these games feel like just another game to you then you weren't raised here or you didn't go to school here." - Oklahoma State head coach Josh Holliday on the Bedlam Series rivalry with Oklahoma. • SEC Weekly Roundup (April 4-7): The Drama Entensifies

It was quite a dramatic weekend in the SEC with big upsets and a huge mess in Starkville between Mississippi State and Georgia. We’ll start with the Friday night game where State got a great pitching performance from Khal Stephen (6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 0 ER, 7 Ks) and a 3-run homer late from Connor Hujsak to put the game away in a 6-1 win. It was Saturday when things got wild when State catcher Johnny Long took things a little too far after a great play to cut down a runner at the plate. After a 40-minute delay, SEC officials in Birmingham decided to eject 11 players, including 7 Mississippi State players who were in the field for the incident but didn’t incite anything. Georgia’s Clayton Chadwick hit a go-ahead homer in the top of the ninth and they’d go on to win 3-2. League officials ended up eliminating the 1-game suspension for State players ejected in Saturday’s game so they could play on Sunday. It was another one-run game, but this time Mississippi State pulled it out 9-8 thanks in part to a Georgia error in the eighth that led to 2 runs. In the possible outcomes I wouldn’t have predicted in a thousand years, Missouri swept Florida over the weekend. After looking like the worst team in the conference all season, the Tigers found a way to get three 1-run wins over the Gators. Game one was a pitcher’s battle that remained 1-1 until this walk-off single by Jedier Hernandez in the 11th. Logan Lunceford and Carter Rustad combined to allow just 2 hits and 1 walk over 11 innings with 13 strikeouts for Missouri. After a Jac Caglianone home run in the sixth on Saturday gave Florida a 3-2 lead, it was Hernandez again who delivered at the plate for Missouri with a game-tying hit. And then the eventual winning run scored on a wild pitch. Missouri jumped out to a 7-1 lead on Sunday as Caglianone didn’t make it out of the second inning. The Gators offense stormed back with a 3-run homer by Colby Shelton to make it 7-4 and then later a 2-run homer that gave Florida a 10-8 lead. But Missouri plated three in the bottom of the ninth for another walk-off win and a stunning sweep. Another weekend and three more wins for Arkansas who already has three sweeps in four SEC series. The latest one coming against Ole Miss. Hagan Smith did his thing in game one striking out 11 batters over 6 innings. Wehiwa Aloy had the big hit with a 3-run homer in the sixth to give the Razorbacks the lead in an eventual 5-2 win. He hit another homer in game two and drove in 3 runs in total, propelling Arkansas to the 8-3 win. Gage Wood was dominant out of the bullpen striking out five of the seven batters he faced to close out the game. The two teams were tied going into the seventh in game three before Arkansas’ Nolan Souza hit a 3-run homer. He’d drive in five in total for the game as Arkansas won 7-4. If anybody is pushing Arkansas for the top spot right now it’s Texas A&M who went on the road and got a good series win at South Carolina. That powerful Aggie offense jumped all over Carolina in game one scoring 7 runs in the first 3 innings. Designated hitter Hayden Schott had a pair of hits and 3 RBI in the game while Ryan Prager did his job on the mound with 12 strikeouts in 6.1 innings in the 9-2 win. It was another early ambush on Saturday for Texas A&M scoring 3 runs in the first with Schott driving in two of them and finishing the game with 3 RBI again. Shane Sdao and Evan Aschenbeck were great in relief for the Aggies allowing just 1 earned run over 6.1 innings with 9 strikeouts. Ethan Petry helped South Carolina avoid the sweep with a 6-5 win on Sunday as he went 3-5 with a home run and 3 RBI. Schott finished off his good weekend for A&M with a home run and 3 more RBI giving him 9 in the three-game series. There is another 11-1 team in SEC play and it’s the Kentucky Wildcats who overwhelmed a really good offensive Alabama lineup in a sweep this past weekend. They won by scores of 6-2, 7-0, and 11-1. In game one, Trey Pooser allowed 2 earned runs on 6 hits and a walk over 7 innings with 3 strikeouts. Dominic Niman tossed a complete game shutout in game two allowing just 3 hits with 7 strikeouts. It was the first time Alabama’s offense had been shutout all year. In the finale, Mason Moore allowed just 1 earned run on 4 hits and 2 walks over 7 innings with 6 strikeouts. While Arkansas and Texas A&M are 1 and 2 in the country in ERA, Kentucky is fourth at 3.42. They get Auburn on the road next weekend before a showdown with Tennessee in Lexington. We’ve seen a lot of teams struggle on the road this year, including Vanderbilt who got swept at South Carolina just two weeks ago. It looked like it might be more of the same going into Baton Rouge as those lost 10-6 to LSU on Thursday. The Tigers jumped on Greysen Carter for 6 runs in the third and 3 in the fourth. Luke Holman struck out 10 in 5.2 innings but ran into trouble in the fifth and sixth innings. The two teams exchanged blows in game two with the game being tied at 2-2, 4-4, and 5-5 throughout the night. But a Jayden Davis 2-run shot in the eighth gave Vanderbilt the lead and eventual 8-6 win. Ethan McElvain was huge in relief for Vanderbilt tossing 3.1 scoreless innings to end the game. Game three was a blowout with Vanderbilt winning 13-3 in eight innings. Carter Holton struckout 10 over 6 innings. Davis continued his strong weekend with 3 hits, while Braden Holcomb drove in 5 with 2 home runs. It was a disappointing start to the weekend for Tennessee as they dropped game one to Auburn 9-5 thanks to a 5-run first inning capped off by this 3-run homer from Cade Belyeu. John Armstrong finished the game for Auburn out of the bullpen tossing 4 scoreless innings allowing just a hit and a walk with 6 strikeouts. But the rest of the weekend was all Tennessee with wins of 12-2 (7) and 19-5 (7). Drew Beam tossed a 7-inning complete game allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits and a walk with 8 strikeouts. Dylan Dreiling and Dalton Bargo each hit a pair of home runs. Tennessee didn’t score in the first inning of game three, but then scored 7, 4, 2, 3, 1, and 2 in the following six innings. Cal Stark had 2 home runs, a double, and 7 RBI in the route. • Big 12 Weekly Roundup (Apr. 4-7): Three Teams Ranked

New Rankings The new College Baseball Nation Top 25 features three teams, two of them are new this week. The UCF Knights move up ten spots to No. 15 and are in the Top 25 for the second-straight week. Oklahoma State returns to the Top 25 for the first time since the preseason poll, checking in at No. 20. Texas Tech also returns for the first time since week 3, finding themselves at No. 22. A Look Back at Week 5 in Big 12 Baseball Kansas State at No. 15 UCF The Knights defended their newly ranked status with a 7-4 victory on Friday night to open the series with the Wildcats. Lex Boedicker went 4-for-5 with six RBI and he was the UCF offense on Friday night as he accounted for all six runs driven in. Kyle Kramer (5-0) and Chase Centala handled the back half of the game on the mound for the Knights and allowed Kansas State just one run. UCF pitching struck out 12 Wildcats in the game. Kansas State re-set the series to even with a 4-3 victory Saturday night. Owen Boerema (3-2) pitched six innings to earn the win. UCF was limited to just five hits in the game and the Wildcats staff racked up 11 strikeouts. Kansas State was also limited to just five hits in the game. A Nick English sacrifice fly RBI in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the ballgame. The Knights responded with a 6-1 win on Sunday to claim the series at home, their fourth straight conference series win. The offense took advantage of some Kansas State errors while Dominic Castellano (3-0) was dominant out of the UCF bullpen over 5 2/3 innings, striking out a career-high eight batters and allowing just one unearned run. Oklahoma at No. 20 Oklahoma State The Cowboys took the Bedlam Series opener 9-6 in Stillwater. Zach Ehrhard led the way for the Oklahoma State offense with three RBI, and Nolan Schubart added a home run and drove in two runs of his own. Left-hander Sam Garcia earned the win on the mound going 5 2/3 innings, while striking out nine Sooners batters and allowing just two runs. An outright slugfest ensued on Saturday as ERAs all around took a major hit. The Sooners offense exploded for 16 base hits, six of those for home runs, led by Scott Mudler who had six RBI. Jaxon Willits and Jackson Nicklaus each added three RBI. Oklahoma claimed the road win on Saturday,19-10 to even the series. Oklahoma State trailed going to the bottom of the seventh inning on Sunday when they responded by scoring six runs which was enough to win 9-5 to claim the Bedlam series. Donovan LaSalle hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning rally, a home run which traveled 435 feet to left-center field. Carson Benge homered for the sixth time this season and he was one of two Cowboys to walk with the bases loaded for a RBI. Ehrhard was 6-for-13 with two home runs and eight RBI in the Bedlam Series for the Cowboys and is currently the leading hitter in the Big 12 play. Houston at No. 22 Texas Tech Texas Tech opened the weekend at home with a 12-9 victory over Houston. Kevin Bazell was 3-for-4 with three RBI and Damian Bravo also added three RBI. Reliever Josh Sanders pitched three perfect innings for the Red Raiders to close out the game. Texas Tech then captured the weekend series with a 15-12 win on Saturday afternoon. A seven-run third inning was followed by a five-run fourth inning. TJ Pompey hit a grand slam in that third inning and had 5 RBI in the game. Bravo was 4-for-5 and added 4 RBI of his own. Houston pitching walked thirteen batters in the game. For the second day in a row, a seven-run third inning aided by a grand slam proved the difference in the ballgame. Gavin Kash hit the grand slam Sunday, his eighth home run of the season, on the first pitch he saw in the at-bat. The Red Raiders went on to complete the weekend sweep with a 12-8 victory. TCU at Cincinnati Cincinnati opened the series with a 4-2 victory on Friday. The Bearcats did not get their first hit in the game against Payton Tolle until the bottom of the sixth inning when they scored all four of their runs. After tying the game on a bases loaded walk, Hunter Jessee had a big two-run single up the middle and Alec Jones also delivered a run-scoring single. The Bearcats altered their starting pitching plan for the second week in a row, and instead of making his usual Friday start, Seth Logue came out of the bullpen after an "opener" started the game for Cincinnati. Logue took the mound with two outs in the fourth inning and pitched the rest of the game, throwing 5 1/3 innings while he allowed just two runs and struck out six and did not walk a batter. On Saturday, a three-run home run off the bat of slugger Tommy O'Connor gave Cincinnati a 6-0 lead, in the second inning. The Bearcats held on to that lead, eventually taking the series with a 6-2 victory. Right-hander Tommy Boba (3-3) delivered a great performance over 5 2/3 innings and earned the win. Christian Mitchelle relieved Boba and was nearly perfect over the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing just one TCU baserunner to earn the save. After taking a 3-1 in the bottom of the first inning, Cincinnati scored five more runs in the bottom of the second inning when they sent 11 batters to the plate. Three of the runs that scored in the inning were the result of bases loaded walks. Kerrington Cross ended the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when his two-run blast over the left field wall gave Cincinnati a 13-2 victory because of the Sunday run-rule. Nathan Taylor pitched a complete game over seven innings, allowing just the two TCU runs. The victory gave Cincinnati its first series sweep in the Big 12. BYU at Texas The Cougars came out swinging against Texas and took an early lead that they never relinquished to capture the opener in Austin 7-5. Collin Reuter had three hits for BYU, including a home run and two RBI. Cooper Vest 4-for-5 in the game with two doubles and one RBI. Cougars right-hander Ben Hansen (4-3) did not have his best stuff on Friday, but he gutted out 5 1/3 innings and helped save the BYU bullpen while also earning the win. Texas evened the series on Friday night with a 4-3 win behind a solid starting effort by Ace Whitehead who pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. The trio of Jalin Flores, Will Gasparino, and Max Belyeu drove in all four runs for the Longhorns. Gage Boehm was perfect in 3 2/3 innings of relief work for Texas to pick up his third save of the season. Boehm struck out five BYU batters and did not allow a baserunner. BYU took the road series with a 7-5 victory in Austin on Saturday. Reuter (3-for-4) was the BYU offense in the series finale as the catcher hit three home runs and drove in five of BYU's seven runs. The Cougars threw the equivalent of a bullpen game on Saturday using five pitchers, none of whom pitched more than 2 2/3 innings to close out the series win on the road. West Virginia at Kansas West Virginia got a much-needed boost with the return of both JJ Wetherholt and Logan Sauve to their lineup. The Mountaineers picked up a win in the duo's first game back, 11-10 at Kansas. West Virginia scored six times in the seventh inning and Wetherholt delivered the go-ahead run with a double in the ninth inning. Jayhawks catcher Jake English was 3-for-3 with four RBI and Lenny Ashby was 2-for-3 with two RBI in defeat. Almost every weekend in the Big 12 there is an old school pitcher's duel. Saturday was the one this weekend when Dominic Voegele of Kansas faced Derek Clark of West Virginia. Voegele threw six innings and allowed three runs while striking out seven. But Clark was better on Saturday as he pitched a 4-0 complete game shutout on just three hits. The feat was also Clark’s third straight complete nine inning game. In easily his best start of the season, he lowered his ERA to 1.70. Brodie Kresser was 4-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and Wetherholt also drove in a run. All bets were off on Sunday when West Virginia completed the series sweep in Lawrence with a 16-9 victory. Sauve, Sam White, Reed Chumley, and Kyle West hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back home runs in a five-run eighth inning. Chumley (3-for-4) homered twice in the game and Grant Hussey also homered as the Mountaineers hit six runs in the game. Clark spoke with College Baseball Nation after the weekend road sweep. Looking back at his Saturday outing, Clark indicated that everything was firing on all cylinders, "Everything was working for me. I think Coach Mazey called a great game and kudos to my defense behind me, they played one heck of a game and that's all I can really ask for." In his previous two starts, Clark was pitching in tight ballgames with little to no room for error, especially late. So how does he pitch with the pressure of knowing a mistake could cost him, and his team? "Baseball is about controlling what you can control," Clark said. "So what I can do is just go out there and compete for my team and do anything in my power to keep us in that game." With a little more run support on Saturday, Clark's approach did not change much, "Just attacking the zone, throwing strikes, trying to get my guys off the field." As evidence of this mentality, Clark retired 13 of the final 14 Kansas batters he faced on Saturday. And sure, he hoped for more runs. Wetherholt was only one of the players returning to the West Virginia lineup this weekend. Having missed all but four games in March, catcher Logan Sauve made his return behind the plate, and in the batting order right behind Wetherholt at the top. The impact of their return was noticeable from the start, Wetherholt was 3-for-4 on Friday with 2 RBI and a walk. "It definitely gives us confidence," Clark said. "We all know JJ is one of the best players in the country. So having his swag in the lineup, along with Logan, it just brings a little bit different energy to our order. I feel like we have a really scary offense that we don't have enough credit for right now." Sauve delivered nine base hits in the series in that two-spot, including a 5-for-7, 4 RBI performance on Sunday when the Mountaineers scored 16 runs. Over those last three mound starts, Clark has thrown 127, 117, and 123 pitches, respectively. He has not changed his recovery process over the last four years between starts, regardless of pitch count, "Having a week is really how I prepare," Clark said. "So I've got it down to a science, in my opinion." Part of the recovery process is the go-to meal upon returning to Morgantown after a road trip. Clark's place of choice? "Chipotle. Easy." Baylor did not play a Big 12 opponent this weekend. Were you able to weather storms when it was bad? Were you able to ride the highs when it was good?" "My thing is, how do we handle the hard times?," Saarloos added. - Kirk Saarloos Radio Show, April 3, 2024 Thanks for stopping by! Follow us on X and on Instagram to keep up with all of our content!

  • SEC Weekly Roundup (March 28-31): Clear Top Hog

We’re halfway through the college baseball season and there is a clear number in the SEC – and perhaps in all of college baseball. The Arkansas Razorbacks are 8-1 in conference play after sweeping LSU this past weekend, and they’ve lost just three games the entire season. In an era of college baseball where offense is on the rise again, Arkansas sets itself apart with a dominating pitching staff. They lead all of Division 1 with a 2.67 team ERA, and they’ve struck out 334 in 229.1 innings. Hagan Smith leads that staff with his 72 strikeouts in 35 innings with a 1.54 ERA. This past weekend against LSU he racked up 10 of those over 6 innings allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits in a 7-4 Arkansas win. Mason Molina had a strong start in game two, but then the bullpen tossed 5 scoreless innings allowing the Razorbacks to walk it off in the 10th inning. In the finale, Peyton Stovall delivered with 3 RBI including a 3-run homer that led to a 7-5 win. We may not be able to ignore Kentucky much longer as they are also off to an 8-1 start in conference play and have only lost four games on the year. Their pitching has also been sneaky good and ranks in the top 10 in Division 1. But in SEC play, the offense has been putting up some big numbers. They’ve scored 9 or more runs in six-of-eight SEC games. This past weekend in a sweep of Ole Miss they won 5-3, 17-9, and 15-1 (7). In game one, Trey Pooser allowed just 2 earned runs over 5.2 innings to pick up the win. On Friday, Nolan McCarthy hit a pair of home runs and drove in six. James McCoy had a double, homer, and 3 RBI in the finale. It was the first time in the program’s history they swept Ole Miss on the road. Florida can’t figure out those midweek games, but on the weekend they continue to come away with series wins. A big part of that is Jac Caglianone on Sundays. They’ve won every Sunday game this year, and in the last five series they’ve split the first two games and then won the series on Sunday behind the arm and bat of Cags. This past weekend against Mississippi State was quite the battle. Trailing 6-2 going into the 8th inning on Friday they scored 2 runs, and then in the ninth they scored 3 more runs to walk it off. Cade Kurland had an RBI double in the 8th and then the walk-off hit in the ninth. Mississippi State starter Khal Stephen was good in this game allowing just 2 earned runs on 3 hits and 2 walks over 6 innings with 8 strikeouts. The Gators tried Brandon Neely as a starter in this game but he gave up 5 runs in 3.1 innings. In the second game, Mississippi State made sure to put away the Gators this time scoring 12 runs. Dakota Jordan and Connor Hujsak each went deep twice in the 12-2 win. Jurrangelo Cijntje was good on the mound for Mississippi State giving up 2 runs on 5 hits over 7 innings with 8 strikeouts. In the finale, the Bulldogs got to Cags in the sixth as he ultimately gave up 3 earned runs over 5.2 innings. But Luke McNeillie came in to shut things down the rest of the way on the mound for Florida. That kept the offense within reach, and as the tweet says, “Jac Caglianone is inevitable” as he gets the 2-run walk-off homer. Alabama was able to bounce back at home against South Carolina this past weekend with a series win. Eli Jones was really good for South Carolina in the game one loss as Alabama came back scoring 2 runs in the seventh and 1 run in the eighth on a wild pitch to take the lead and win 4-3. In game two, Alabama broke open a 6-6 tie with a 7-run eighth inning. Kade Snell got the scoring started with a 2-RBI double. Ian Patrutz had a 3-run homer in the inning and drove in a total of 5 runs. The Gamecocks escaped the road series with a 9-8 win in game three, holding off a comeback attempt in the ninth where the Crimson Tide scored 4 runs and made the final out at third base on a weird play. The weekend got off to a rough start for Tennessee as Georgia pounded them in a 16-2 win in 7 innings. What makes the win even more impressive for Georgia is that Charlie Condon was just 1-4 without a home run as others stepped up. Leadoff man, Corey Collins, went deep twice and drove in 6. Condon did unleash in game two going 5-6 with 2 home runs, but the Volunteers were able to outslug the Bulldogs in a 16-11 win. Tennessee left fielder, Dylan Dreiling, also hit a pair of home runs and he drove in 7 of the 16 runs the Volunteers scored. After scoring 27 runs in the first two games of the series, the Georgia offense was shutout in a 7-0 for Tennessee in the finale. Zander Sechrist and Nate Snead combined for the shutout allowing just 6 hits and 1 walk with 8 strikeouts. Dreiling had 3 more hits as did Kavares Tears for the Tennessee offense. It’s tough to win on the road in the SEC, and especially at Blue Bell Park as Auburn found out this past weekend after getting swept by Texas A&M in three close games. The Aggies took advantage of Auburn’s pitching mistakes in game one with 3 runs in the 6th inning thanks to a walk, walk, hit batter, hit batter, and another walk. They went on to win that one 9-7. Braden Montgomery, who had 4 home runs on the weekend, hit two of them in the second game – a 12-8 win for Texas A&M. Auburn’s Ike Irish hit a grand slam in the ninth to make the final score look a little closer. The Tigers tried to claw their way to a win in the third game scoring 3 runs in the eighth to tie it, and then after giving the lead back in the bottom half, Gavin Miller hit a game-tying home run in the 9th. Then the offenses went silent for a while before Ted Burton sent the home crowd away happy with this walk-off hit to cap off the sweep. Vanderbilt had the quietest sweep of the weekend taking down Missouri 3-1, 4-0, and 3-1. Starters Greysen Carter (8.1 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 0 ER, 11 Ks), Bryce Cunningham (7 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 0 ER, 12 Ks), and Carter Holton (7 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 1 ER, 8 Ks) combined to allow just 1 earned run on the week over 22.1 innings with 31 strikeouts. Davis Diaz had a good weekend at the plate for Vanderbilt driving in 5 of the 10 runs scored by Vanderbilt. • Big 12 Weekly Roundup (Mar. 28-31): Yet Another Ranked Team

A Look Back at Week 4 in Big 12 Baseball Kansas at BYU Kansas right-hander Reese Dutton recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts as Kansas defeated BYU 11-1 in Provo on Thursday. Dutton shut down the Cougars over eight innings allowing just one run and improved to 6-1 this season with the win. Jake English and Michael Brooks each had three hits and three RBI to lead the Kansas offense. The Jayhawks now have six-straight wins in the opening game of the weekend, which includes four-straight in Big 12 action. A Friday double header started with a Jayhawks 4-3 victory to claim the series. English broke open a scoreless game with a solo shot to lead off the top of the fourth inning, the first of his three hits and two RBI in the game. Brooks added two hits and two RBI for the totality of the Jayhawks offense. Kansas starter Dominic Voegele (3-1) tossed six innings of one-run baseball where he allowed five hits and earned the win. In game two of the afternoon, Kansas took a 7-0 lead after a four-run sixth inning keyed by a Kodey Shojinaga two-run home run. BYU battled back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a ballgame. Shojinaga drove in another run for insurance and the Jayhawks won 8-5 to complete the road sweep. Houston at TCU TCU got the weekend started by punishing Houston 14-1 in Ft. Worth. Right-hander Louis Rodriguez (3-0) pitched eight scoreless innings for TCU and struck out 10 Houston batters. The Horned Frogs offense pounded out 21 base hits led by 3-for-5 performances by Chase Brunson, Logan Maxwell, and Luke Boyers. Houston had as many hits in the defeat as they did errors, four. Payton Tolle (3-1), after pitching a complete game in his last outing against Oklahoma State, was one out shy of another complete game as he tossed 8 2/3 innings in a 6-2 series-clinching victory. Center fielder Chase Brunson was 2-for-4 with three RBI in the leadoff spot for the Horned Frogs. TCU completed the sweep on Saturday with a 6-4 victory in the most unorthodox of ways. The Horned Frogs scored six runs on only two hits, four of the runs were unearned as TCU capitalized on three Houston errors. A four-run bottom of the seventh inning gave TCU the lead they would hold onto. Texas at Kansas State Kansas State earned their only win of the weekend in a wild 14-6 victory over Texas on Thursday night. The Wildcats plated eight runs in the second inning and they sent 13 batters to the plate in the frame. A three-run ninth inning for the Longhorns made the final score appear closer than this game actually was in the end. Offense was at a premium on Friday night when Texas bounced back to even the series with a 21-11 win. Max Belyeu and Rylan Galvan each drove in five runs and had nine hits combined. The game was tied at 11 after seven innings before Texas plated three runs in the eighth inning and seven more runs in the ninth inning to secure victory. The Longhorns then took the series win on Saturday with a 6-3 victory behind six innings from Max Grubbs who allowed just one unearned run. Kansas State scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to get within a run, but Texas responded with a two-spot of their own in the top of ninth inning and Andre Duplantier II did the rest, closing out the Wildcats and the series victory. Texas Tech at No. 25 UCF Texas Tech led 4-1 at the halfway point in the series opener on Thursday night in Orlando. UCF battled back until the very end. Jack Zyska doubled home the tying run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Knights walked-off game one 5-4 winners when Andrew Williamson was hit by a pitch to force in the winning run, the second such occurrence in Big 12 play for the Knights already this season. Damian Bravo was a perfect 5-for-5 for Texas Tech in defeat. UCF won 2-1 on Friday night and claimed the series. Kyle Robinson was a tough luck loser for Texas Tech as he allowed just two runs over six innings on the mound. But Dom Stagliano was just a little better over 6 1/3 innings allowing the sole Red Raiders run in the game and only three hits. Chase Centala relieved Stagliano and pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to close out the Red Raiders. Texas Tech rallied to avoid the sweep with a 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon. Right-hander Mac Heuer pitched one-run baseball over 5 2/3 innings while Drew Woodcox and Gavin Kash each hit a solo home run to power the Red Raiders offense. Dominic Castellano pitched five solid innings of relief for the Knights to keep the game close, he allowed just one run and struck out six. Cincinnati at Baylor Cincinnati's Tommy O'Connor homered twice and drove in four runs and Seth Logue pitched 6 1/3 innings in relief for the Bearcats in an opening night defeat of Baylor in Waco. Logue struck out eight batters and allowed just two runs. The Bearcats took game one 8-3, with Baylor scoring their three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Baylor evened the series Friday night with an 8-6 win. Josh Kross hit a grand slam for Cincinnati, his 11th home run of the season. Hunter Teplanszky hit a three-run home run for Baylor and Enzo Apodaca and Zach Mazoch each drove in two runs. The Bears claimed the series on Saturday with a 9-2 victory. Teplanszky helped lead the Bears offense with three RBI, while David Altman matched him with three RBI and hit a home run. Baylor Freshman right-hander Collin McKinney was the pitching story of the game as he struck out 10 Cincinnati batters and allowed just one hit over 6 1/3 innings. Oklahoma State at West Virginia Oklahoma State edged West Virginia Friday night 2-1 to open the series in Morgantown on a traditional weekend schedule. Sam Garcia was brilliant over seven innings striking out 11 batters while allowing just the one West Virginia run. Aidan Major was equally dominant over eight innings with 13 strikeouts, but he took the tough-luck loss as he allowed the two Cowboys runs. Colin Brueggemann homered for the Cowboys and Zach Ehrhard drove home the other run with a two-out RBI double in the sixth inning. The story Saturday was about the old school pitcher's duel between Derek Clark and Brian Holiday. Each starter allowed just one run in the contest, Holiday over eight innings and Clark over nine complete innings, his second straight outing of nine innings. After a scoreless 10th inning for both teams, the game was still tied 1-1, before a nine-run 11th inning for Oklahoma State propelled them to the series win as they won 10-1. Sunday looked nothing like the previous two games in Morgantown. A six-run second inning and a three-run third inning gave West Virginia a 9-1 lead with six innings left to play. Ehrhard was 5-for-6 with a home run for the Cowboys while Spencer Barnett was 4-for-5 with five RBI and Kyle West added four RBI for the Mountaineers. West Virginia used six pitchers and Oklahoma State used seven in the 15-10 Mountaineers sweep-avoiding win. Oklahoma did not play a Big 12 Conference opponent this weekend. New Rankings After the weekend, there is still just one team in the new College Baseball Nation Top 25, and it is yet another new team. Kansas State, previously ranked No. 23, dropped their series at home against Texas this weekend to fall out of the Top 25. The UCF Knights have now moved in to claim the No. 25 spot. The Knights are in the Top 25 for the first time this season after winning their series at home this weekend against Texas Tech. "When you have such a devastating loss, you want 'em to have a good night's sleep." Mazey added that he told his team after Saturday's 11th inning implosion, "You never panic, and you only have a few opportunities in life to show people how tough you are." "I think that each weekend is its own story and in each weekend you have a chance to grow. Sometimes you lose a series but you get better.” - Kansas Head Coach Dan Fitzgerald “Winning three straight series in a row is a really big deal. I don’t care what conference you are playing in, winning three consecutive conference series takes a lot, and takes a whole team effort.” - UCF catcher/DH Danny Neri after the Knights defeated Texas Tech Friday night.
